Specialty lenses are contacts that are unique and serve a special purpose. Not all optometrists are qualified to fit these lenses. Drs. Cauchi and Peters have taken the time to attend specialized training seminars in order to become certified to fit these lenses. These include:
Scleral lenses are used to resurface an eye when the cornea has become misshapen due to a disease, accident or failed LASIK procedure. Many of these patients have lost their driving priviledges due to poor vision. Scleral lenses can often restore vision and allow them to drive again.
This is a rigid gas permeable lens with a soft skirt/edge. We offer these lenses to patients who want the clarity of a rigid lens but the comfort of a soft lens. Athletes who wear rigid gas permeable lenses sometimes find that dust gets lodged under their lenses when they are working out in a dusty environment. This is extremely painful and can be dangerous as the eye tears trying to wash out that foreign particle. The hybrid’s soft skirt prevents debris from getting stuck under the lens.
Custom-designed RGPs: Rigid gas permeable lenses provide exceptionally clear vision. However, sometimes with a standard lens, they just don’t fit properly. Some may move excessively, some drop with every blink, some ride too high failing to cover the pupil. A computer designed rigid lens can fit better because it is designed from a map of your eye. This is similar to a custom made suit. They just fit better because they were made just for you.
Custom-designed soft lenses: When you have a prescription that is very high or an eye shape that is out-of-the ordinary, you need a lens that can be customized. We have many options for you.
These are hand-painted soft lenses used to restore the appearance of an eye. Certain diseases or accidents can leave the cornea with a large white scar. Most people find this unattractive and a source of embarrassment. We can design a lens that will allow the scarred eye to match the other eye.
